Heater Safety

To all of you Homeowners in Texas, Halloween is over and fall is in full swing. Temperatures are starting to drop and soon we will need to turn on the furnace. Before you flip that switch, please make sure you have your heating system checked by a qualified Heating and A/C technician. This could be the difference of life and death since roughly 1/3 of home fire deaths occur during the winter months. Technicians will also check to make sure that there are no Carbon Dioxide leaks.
Below are some suggestions to prevent CO2 poisoning:
- Have a heating specialist make sure that the furnace and fireplace are properly vented.
- Do not use broken space heaters.
- Turn off a heater if the burner flame looks odd, such as yellow, smoky or unsteady flames.
- Get outside if you feel nauseous or light-headed. Make sure to leave doors/windows open to air out the room.
- Don’t sleep in a room where a gas heater is burning.
